As a longtime iPhone user, I have very little experience using Android based phones. So I figured I would give one a shot for a week to see how it compared to my iPhone.
The Android phone I’m giving a test drive is the Samsung Captivate. I’m testing it on the AT&T network, but I believe this phone is available on Verizon and most other major carriers as well.
My first thoughts:
- Light and thin, and a bit taller than the iPhone. Despite it’s size, it fits nicely in my pocket.
- The screen is incredibly sharp and brilliant clear. Colors pop.
- The phone slightly vibrates when you type, which is a nice feature. It provides some tactile feedback that as far as I know, the iPhone doesn’t provide.
- The Twitter app kicks the iPhone Twitter app’s ass. The UI is so much more impressive.
- Seems like the Android platform, by nature of not being so strict about UI rules like the iPhone, allows developers to be more creative, and the applications reflect this.
I’ll have more to share about the phone as I use it throughout the week, but so far I am really impressed.
I’m a dedicated iPhone user, but I have a soft spot in my heart for Samsung Mobile. Glad to hear their Galaxy S line-up (which is actually being released on all four carriers around the same time) is competitive with both the iPhone and HTC’s recent releases. One plug for my employer: for a full rundown of the Captivate, I’d recommend checking out Bonnie Cha’s comprehensive review.

What version of Android OS is it running? Looks like a possibly skinned 1.6 to me, but I’m not sure. (The Verizon phones in particular suffer from skinned OS disorder, HTC’s Sense and MotoBlur add little to the later versions.)
